This memo is to provide you information about the actions Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) staff is taking with our operating partner Amtrak regarding the outbreak of H1N1/"Swine Flu." CCJPA staff is monitoring the swine flu virus situation, and we want to assure you that we are working closely with Amtrak to be timely in our immediate actions and next steps.

Please be assured of the following:

As of this writing, there are NO train-related travel advisories

At this time, NO cases of swine flu on Capitol Corridor trains or facilities have been reported to CCJPA.

All Capitol Corridor crews have been advised by Amtrak of swine flu symptoms and have been directed to review Amtrak procedures regarding Serious Communicable Diseases.

In accordance with the hygiene practices advised by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Amtrak employees have been advised to take precautions, such as thorough and frequent hand washing. Human-to-human spread of swine flu occurs in the same way as regular seasonal flu, through the coughing or sneezing of infected people.

For the safety of all on board, Amtrak as our operating partner retains the right to refuse travel or remove from a train any passenger who poses a health hazard to other passengers or employees. As a reminder, this policy is printed on the back of each ticket and posted on Amtrak.com.

We will keep you advised of any additional information as it becomes available.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE H1N1/"SWINE FLU"
Simple Tips to Stay Healthy

Cleaning efforts alone will not completely prevent the spread of the flu.

What You Can Do
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the most effective steps you can take to prevent catching or spreading the flu are to follow these simple tips:

There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.

Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

The CDC advises that influenza is spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.

When you cough or sneeze cover your nose and mouth with a tissue. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If you don't have a tissue, use your upper arm not your hand.

If you get sick, the CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

http://dot.ca.gov/rail/go/dor/division-of-rail-reports/index.cfm. The Department prepared the Plan as an examination of passenger and freight rail transportation in the State, in accordance with Section 14036 of the Government Code.

The passenger element of the Plan reviews the current operations of the three State-supported intercity rail passenger routes (Pacific Surfliner, San Joaquin and Capitol Corridor). It also outlines ten-year plans for operations, marketing, and capital improvements, and ten-year route objectives. It also looks at high-speed and maglev programs in the State as well as the four commuter services.

The freight section of the Plan provides an overview of the State freight rail system. It discusses policy issues, funding programs, environmental issues and new freight technology. It also examines freight issues including international trade growth, trends in intermodal traffic and short-line capabilities and needs.

If you have any questions or comments on the Plan please submit them via E-mail to: california_state_rail_plan_-_comments@dot.ca.gov. Comments will be considered for inclusion in the 2009-10 to 2019-20 edition of the Plan which is now under development.

Effective April 1, 2009, Capitol Corridor will no longer accept Placer Commuter Express monthly passes for travel aboard the Capitol Corridor trains without a new "Step-Up Coupon." Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) and Placer Commuter Express (PCE) have modified the reciprocal ticketing arrangement and are implementing new procedures.

CCJPA and PCE have established the "Step-Up Coupon" Transfer Program to accommodate Placer Commuter Express monthly ticket holder patrons who transfer to Capitol Corridor trains (or Thruway buses) when traveling between Auburn, Rocklin, Roseville and Sacramento.

Placer Commuter Express monthly pass holders who wish to travel aboard the Capitol Corridor trains or motorcoach buses, must now present both their monthly pass PLUS a Step-Up Coupon to board the train or Capitol Corridor motorcoach bus.

Placer County will sell these Step-Up Coupon booklets to Placer Commuter Express passengers. The Step-Up Coupons are not available from Capitol Corridor conductors or bus drivers. Placer Commuter Express monthly pass holders who board the Capitol Corridor train or motorcoach bus without a Step-Up Coupon MUST purchase a full-fare train ticket from the conductor or bus driver.

Please direct ALL questions about this program, and inquiries about where to buy these Step-Up Coupons to Placer Commuter Express at (916) 784-6177.
