Temporary Schedule Changes in June

Beginning Tuesday, June 3, 2008, Union Pacific will be conducting trackwork that will significantly impact Capitol Corridor service until the work is done, which is expected to be on June 28, 2008. During the course of the track work, some morning and early afternoon Capitol Corridor trains will not operate between Martinez and Suisun/Fairfield. Instead, connecting buses will carry passengers between those two stations, and trains will operate on the remainder of the route on a modified schedule. Normal service is scheduled to resume on Thursday, June 29, 2008.

THE PROJECT
Union Pacific (UP) will upgrade track infrastructure (primarily railroad ties & bridges) between Benicia (North of Martinez) and Suisun/Fairfield. UP will install approximately 40,000 new wood ties at their own expense. This is the second installment of a multi-year track upgrade project between Oakland and Sacramento that will keep the railroad in good condition so trains can operate reliably.

SERVICE DETAILS
Changes to Train Schedule
Four trains will be suspended during the construction period to give Union Pacific extra time to work. The following trains WILL NOT OPERATE from June 3, 2008- June 28, 2008:
Eastbound trains: #534, #746
Westbound trains: #533, #745

Changes to Motorcoach Connections
Some changes to connecting motorcoach service will also occur as a result of this track work. Motorcoach service changes include:

ROUTE 99
Emeryville to San Francisco
Westbound motorcoaches (traveling from Emeryville into San Francisco) will experience delays of approximately 35 minutes. Please refer to the temporary schedule on www.capitolcorridor.org for departure times from Emeryville.

ROUTES 3 & 20
Sacramento to Marysville/Chico/Redding and Colfax/Reno:
Some motorcoach connections at Sacramento will depart approximately 25-30 minutes later to allow for connections from trains running on adjusted schedules.

ROUTE 7
Martinez Motorcoach Connections:
Motorcoach connections from trains 526, 533, 724, and 729 will depart at 10:40am
Motorcoach connections from trains 528, 535, 728, 733 will depart at 12:10pm
Motorcoach connections from trains 532, 541, 734, and 741 will depart at 3:45pm

ROUTE 21
San Jose Motorcoach Connections:
Motorcoach connections from trains 527 and 727 will depart at 11:30am
Motorcoach connections from trains 537 and 737 will depart at 3:55pm
For other motorcoach/train connections, motorcoach buses will wait for trains, in accordance with the temporary schedule.

Bicycle Advisory
Due to limited space aboard motorcoach buses used during the bus
bridge, Capitol Corridor strongly discourages cyclists from traveling
with their bicycles on affected trains between Suisun/Fairfield and Martinez
for the duration of the track work project. Please visit www.capitolcorridor.org for the temporary bicycle policy that will be in effect during the trackwork.

For more Information
Passengers can find the temporary schedule for June 3-28, 2008 online at www.capitolcorridor.org and posted at stations as well. For more information call 877-9-RIDECC (877-974-3322) or visit www.capitolcorridor.org Passengers may also get service updates via email by signing up for CC Rail Mail, Capitol Corridor's e-newsletter.

Capitol Corridor, Amtrak and Caltrans Honors Emeryville Resident Doras Briggs
First Recipient of the California Golden STAR Award

OAKLAND, CALIF., May 10, 2008 -- The Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA), Amtrak and Caltrans announced the recipient of the first California Golden STAR award at today's National Train Day celebration in Emeryville. The three entities created the California Golden STAR (State Advocate of Rail) award to honor advocates from California who are dedicated to the cause of passenger rail.

"Doras Briggs is honored for her tireless devotion to passenger rail service, for her service on countless passenger rail advisory and advocacy groups and for creating the 'Station Host' program," CCJPA Chair Forrest Williams said. "The Golden STAR award will be rotated throughout the state, but I am thrilled that the very first recipient of this award lives along the Capitol Corridor route."

Examples of Doras' leadership and support for passenger rail include serving as:
Director of both the National Association of Railroad Passengers and Train Riders Association of California;
Former member of the Amtrak Customer Advisory Committee and the Contra Costa County Ad Hoc Intercity Rail Advisory Committee; and
Citizen Representative of the California Coast Rail Coordinating Council.

"My love of trains began when I was five years old in Waterloo, Iowa and it hasn't diminished since," said Doras Briggs. "When I was on the Amtrak Customer Advisory Committee I made 77 speeches until I ran out of steam."

Briggs had the innovative idea to create the Station Host program. "Thanks to Doras, the Amtrak Station Host program began in March 2001, right here in Emeryville," said Amtrak Assistant Superintendent Anthony Chapa. "Station Hosts are trained volunteers who help our passengers at Amtrak stations. The program has grown so successful for Amtrak that stations all over the country have adopted it."

Eighty-nine-year-old Briggs still volunteers most mornings, donning her official Station Host cap to greet and help waiting Capitol Corridor riders.

"We unanimously selected Doras Briggs for this honor because her efforts have helped raise awareness that we can't continue to pave our way out of congestion," said William Bronte, Chief, Caltrans Division of Rail. "Celebrating National Train Day and promoting intercity passenger rail supports an important travel alternative that's greener, cleaner and cheaper."

Today's first annual National Train Day celebration was hosted by the City of Emeryville, Wareham Properties, CCJPA, Amtrak and Caltrans. It was one of over 50 community celebrations held in passenger rail stations all over the country.

Service Earns #1 Ranking in the Nation for Customer Satisfaction

OAKLAND, CALIF., May 14, 2008 -- The Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) has announced two significant achievements: CCJPA set the highest monthly ridership record in the history of the Capitol Corridor service and customers ranked Capitol Corridor number 1 in the nation in Amtrak's Customer Satisfaction scores.
"In April, 145,234 riders boarded our trains," said CCJPA Chair Forrest Williams. "This beats the previous monthly threshold set in May 2007 when 141,789 passengers rode Capitol Corridor. We are only halfway through our fiscal year and our revenue and popularity with the public continue to soar."

Why the Increase?
Capitol Corridor officials attribute the rise in revenue to increased weekend ridership and passengers taking advantage of Capitol Corridor's exceptional customer service and affordable fares. "Our improved on-time performance, train frequency, comfortable and stress-free rides make Capitol Corridor a viable transportation alternative to driving," said CCJPA Managing Director Eugene Skoropowski. "Amtrak gathers the customer satisfaction scores each month for 43 passenger rail corridors nationwide and we are proud to rank number 1 for the second time this year."

Top Reasons Passengers Ride Capitol Corridor
Supplementing the national rating, Capitol Corridor conducts its own Customer Satisfaction Study twice a year. In the January survey, the top five reasons passengers choose Capitol Corridor include avoiding traffic, enjoying the relaxing ride, saving money, using travel time productively and helping to protect the environment. In addition, 63% of the passengers stated if Capitol Corridor service was not available they would drive alone instead, making the Capitol Corridor a key contributor in reducing automobile-based greenhouse gases and improving regional air quality.

Capitol Corridor Receives $1.9 Million Check from Office of Homeland Security
Voter-Approved Proposition 1b Funds Enhances Passenger Rail Security

OAKLAND, CALIF., April 29, 2008 -- California Homeland Security Director Matthew Bettenhausen today announced the state allocated $1.9 million dollars to Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) to help enhance safety and security measures on the system. The $1.9 million is part of the overall $15 million dollars earmarked this year to improve passenger rail safety and security in the state, funding made possible by the voter-approved Prop 1B, a transportation measure to improve infrastructure, security, and public safety.

"The $1.9 million dollar check is the first installment of a multi-year investment totaling $19 million for Capitol Corridor security measures," said CCJPA Board Member Roger Dickinson. "More and more northern Californians choose the Capitol Corridor because it's a reliable, efficient, affordable and safe. As we grow, it's our goal to continue to meet the traveling public's needs, which includes their need to feel safe when they are on the trains or at the stations." CCJPA Director Dickinson received a ceremonial check from Director Matthew Bettenhausen at a news conference in Sacramento today.

The Prop 1B bond funding allows the CCJPA to bolster security by installing security cameras throughout the system, enhancing the existing passenger communications system and constructing a Security Operations Center.

"The Proposition 1B funding allocated to Capitol Corridor is a triple win scenario," said CCJPA Chair Forrest Williams. "By making our passenger rail service safer we are getting more people out of their cars, which eases congestion, improves air quality and reduces greenhouse gas emissions in the region. As an added bonus, these funds reinvested for various security projects will also help create jobs along our corridor."

Annual Ridership Soars to Over 1.5 Million Passengers

OAKLAND, CALIF., March 17, 2008 -- The Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) has announced the highest annual ridership in the history of the Capitol Corridor service. "The February statistics from Amtrak show that our 12-month ridership total hit 1,523,630 passengers last month," said CCJPA Managing Director Eugene Skoropowski. "This ridership beat our previous threshold that we broke in January when 1,503,210 riders boarded our trains."

Capitol Corridor is only five months into its fiscal year and already it is demonstrating a continuing trend of improvement in four critical categories. "Ridership increased 14% this year, but surpassing 1.5 million riders is not the only statistic to boast about," said CCJPA Chair Forrest Williams. "Capitol Corridor revenue is up 20% and our on-time performance reached 86%. The very best news is that our revenue-to-cost ratio for this period is 52%, a cost benefit all transit systems strive to achieve. This is the best report we've ever had, for riders, for revenue, and for fare box recovery," Williams added.

Capitol Corridor officials attribute the rise in revenue to increased ridership as more passengers are paying for longer trips and full-fare tickets. "When it comes to transportation choices, more and more drivers are picking by their pocketbook," said Skoropowksi. "On an annual basis, we have 200,000 more riders than we did in 2007. Riders are lured to our trains by rising gas prices, our improved on-time performance, train frequency, exceptional customer service, stress-free ride and affordable fares," Skoropowski added.

All Aboard Capitol Corridor's Knitting Train

Oakland, CALIF., February 13, 2008 -- On Saturday, February 23, 2008 Capitol Corridor, Chronicle Books, and CRAFT magazine invite knitters, crocheters and craft lovers onboard for the annual Stitch 'n Ride™ event to Stitches West 2008, the West's biggest and best knitting expo. Stitch 'n Ride™ is a non-stop "knitfest" where knitters and crocheters from Sacramento and the Bay Area can hop on board the Capitol Corridor and breeze down to the Santa Clara Convention Center for this annual event.

"Traveling via train is the best way to get to Stitches West," said Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority Chair Forrest Williams. "You can enjoy the company of other knitters traveling to the convention, share ideas and showcase your prized projects to others. Stitch 'n Ride™ is not only pleasant, easy and cost-effective, it's the greenest way to go. A train with 500 passengers pollutes less and emits less greenhouse gases then 500 cars on the road."

This year's Stitch 'n Ride™ is bigger because Capitol Corridor is offering a special dedicated train just for yarnaholics. It's better because we're combining fun with charity. Every year onboard our annual Stitch 'n Ride train, Capitol Corridor gives out goody bags and door prize tickets for fabulous prizes generously donated by our sponsors. "This year, we've teamed up with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to promote knitting for a good cause by hosting a chemo cap drive to provide warm hats for patients currently undergoing chemotherapy," said Capitol Corridor Marketing Manager Priscilla Kalugdan. "Stitch 'n Riders can help us with this cause by providing finished knit or crocheted chemo caps by the end of the Stitch 'n Ride trip. Each submitted cap earns knitters another opportunity to win great onboard prizes. We hope to gather a trainload of caps for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society this year," Kalugdan added.

Capitol Corridor will provide a free shuttle from the train station to the convention center for our Stitch 'n Ride™ event on February 23rd or if you prefer to walk, it's a short 10-15 minute stroll to the convention center.

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Stitch 'n Ride™ train to Stitches West 2008! Since this is a special train just for knitters, passengers who have regular Amtrak tickets will not be able to board this train. Purchase tickets early! Special tickets are required to board and be part of the Stitch 'n Ride™ festivities. Passengers can get more information and purchase tickets at: http://www.capitolcorridor.org/stitchnride

Capitol Corridor, Chronicle Books, and CRAFT magazine are extending a free invitation to all media to ride the train. Please contact Luna Salaver at 510 874 7474 or lsalave@bart.gov to arrange for your free train ticket.

On-Going Sate Reinvestment Needed to Sustain Train Service

Oakland, CA -- In an effort to protect the State of California's 18-year investment in passenger rail, an "Intercity Passenger Rail Day" in Sacramento will be held where legislators, transportation executives, corridor managers and elected officials will discuss strategies to sustain and expand intercity passenger service. The media is invited to the lunch reception and program, which will be held at Capitol Plaza (Temple Ballroom), 1025 9th Street in Sacramento on Thursday, February 21, 2008 at noon.

"Since 2001, California's population grew 11%," said Capitol Corridor Managing Director Eugene Skoropowski. "In that same period, vehicle miles traveled grew only 8%, while ridership on California's three intercity passenger rail lines increased a whopping 43%--train ridership is exceeding all growth expectations. Now more than 20% of all Amtrak's riders are in California." Skoropowski added.

Intercity rail is the only mode of transport with no source of federal capital match. "California's intercity passenger rail network success was accomplished with 100% voter-approved state funding," said Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) Chair Forrest Williams. "To continue our success and protect California's investment in intercity rail services, we need on-going, consistent, and reliable flow of state capital funding that we can depend on."

After the reception, the Chairs of all four intercity passenger rail corridors will speak on the benefits, challenges, emerging services and opportunities of the state's intercity passenger rail network. They will use this forum to urge all legislators to commit to providing an annual stream of funding to sustain and improve the state's passenger rail system.

"In this era of environmental awareness and concern and rising gas prices, reinvesting in our passenger intercity rail systems gives California drivers a viable travel alternative," said CCJPA Chair Forrest Williams. "Each year, millions of passengers choose to take our trains instead of driving our busy freeways. California's reinvestment for intercity passenger rail is essential to help meet the Governor's greenhouse gas reduction strategies."

Oakland, CALIF. - Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) has announced that its 15th Anniversary Commemorative Poster has won a first place award from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) in their 28th Annual AdWheel Award competition.

The AdWheel Awards, which recognize excellence in public transportation marketing and communications, were presented at a gala awards ceremony on October 8 in Charlotte, NC, as part of APTA's 2007 Annual Meeting. More than 750 entries were received in this year's competition. Capitol Corridor's 15th Anniversary Commemorative Poster won 1st place in the Print Media Category for Group 2 (transportation agencies of more than 1 million but less than 4 million passengers per year).

"We want to attract new riders on the train and get drivers off the highways. When we see that our ridership numbers grow every month, we know we're accomplishing that goal," said Forrest Williams, CCJPA Chair "This service exists because of its passengers; and it's an honor to serve them. It's even more of an honor when we receive recognition from our industry peers, such as this APTA AdWheel Award."
"Receiving a coveted AdWheel Award is a prestigious accomplishment and should be celebrated as a mark of originality, creativity, and excellence in public transportation marketing and communications," said APTA President William W. Millar.

Capitol Corridor created the poster to commemorate its 15th anniversary in December 2006. "The poster celebrates the community of riders whose support over the past 15 years has contributed to the Capitol Corridor's success," said Eugene Skoropowski, CCJPA Managing Director. "Real passengers, not models, were photographed onboard to lend authenticity; and the photo shoot was held on board a Capitol Corridor train. Additionally, the poster highlights important milestone events in Capitol Corridor's history."

The 15th Anniversary poster was displayed and distributed at stations and events. The poster achieved the goal of recognizing and appreciating those who have contributed to the success of Capitol Corridor, including partners, riders and officials.

Capitol Corridor's marketing program has a strong history of winning awards, including a 2005 APTA AdWheel Grand Prize award for its Stitch 'n Ride knitting event and a 2006 APTA AdWheel 1st Place award for its Annual Performance Report.

May 2007 Highest Ridership in History of Service

Oakland, CALIF., June 11, 2007 - The Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) has announced that May 2007 marked the highest monthly ridership total in the history of the Capitol Corridor service with 141,789 passengers, surpassing the previous record set in April 2007 with 127,572 passengers.

With 32 trains a day between Sacramento and the Bay Area, and 14 daily direct trains to San Jose, the Capitol Corridor service provides a convenient alternative to traveling along the congested I-80, I-880, and I-680 freeways. And with comfortable seats, connections to BART, and a Café Car on every train, it's hard to find a more convenient way to travel around Northern California.

"Californians have discovered the convenience of train travel. On the Capitol Corridor you'll find business travelers working on laptops, college students catching up on sleep, school groups on field trips, families playing cards, and groups of commuters having happy hour," said Eugene Skoropowski, CCJPA Managing Director. "For people who value how they spend their time, the train offers a better alternative than sitting in traffic."

The Capitol Corridor seems to be on the right track. Fiscal year-to-date ridership has increased 13.3% due to eight consecutive months of substantial growth, and revenue has also increased 21.7% during the same time period. This positive trend can be attributed to the introduction of a 32 train schedule last fall and targeted marketing aimed at filling seats on trains with available capacity.

CCJPA Chair Forrest Williams is quick to point out that Capitol Corridor's service partners deserve credit for helping to achieve record ridership numbers. "Union Pacific has made a commitment to improve the on-time performance of the Capitol Corridor trains, which are dispatched by Union Pacific employees; and Amtrak has made an effort to ensure that the trains are running with full consists - maximizing the number of seats available on trains."

The Capitol Corridor train service was made possible by Californians who voted to provide capital funding for passenger rail service. With no federal funding program to call upon, the Capitol Corridor was built with state capital funds, and operating funds are generated solely from passenger fares, and an annual allocation of state funds. The investment of public funds into intercity rail has paid off for Californians, as the Capitol Corridor is now the third busiest Amtrak-operated route in the country- and growing. California also boasts three of Amtrak's five busiest routes, and 20% of all Amtrak riders in the nation are now in California.

When CCJPA began managing the service in 1998, there were eight daily trains and 463,000 passengers annually. Recovery of costs from passenger fares in 1998 was 29.8% Today, just eight years later, nearly 1.4 million passengers ride the Capitol Corridor annually, and passenger fares cover nearly 50% of the cost of service, among the best recovery ratio for public transportation in the country.

"Most would agree that this investment has proven to be very worthwhile, and we have delivered what was promised. This is evident with the growing popularity of the Capitol Corridor. Along with this growth comes the need for additional equipment, such as more train cars, so that we can sustain growth and continue to give Californians frequent, reliable and convenient intercity rail service," said Skoropowski.

Chronicle Books and CRAFT Magazine Sponsor Onboard Event to Knitting Convention

Oakland, CALIF., February 15, 2007 - On Saturday, February 24, 2007 Capitol Corridor, Chronicle Books, and CRAFT magazine invite knitters, crocheters and craft lovers on board train 727 for the 4th Stitch 'n Ride(tm) event to Stitches West 2007 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

The Stitch 'n Ride train will be a non-stop "knitfest" - with prize drawings and goody bags that will include gifts from Lion Brand Yarn, CRAFT magazine, and Chronicle Books (while supplies last) - all the way from Sacramento to the doors of Stitches West at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Stitch 'n Ride passengers can take advantage of a 10% discount on the lowest available fare for travel to and from Santa Clara from February 22-25, 2007, available on the Capitol Corridor website.

"Knitting is a really portable hobby - we see that more and more of our riders have discovered how easy it is to bring their knitting or crochet projects on board," explains Priscilla Kalugdan, Marketing Manager for the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority.

Forrest Williams, Chair of the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority Board agrees, "Stitch 'n Ride encourages knitters and crocheters to ditch the traffic and hop aboard the train so they can enjoy more hobby time and catch up with friends."

Stitch 'n Ride Success Continues

"Last year, we had more than 150 people take the Stitch n' Ride train, and they've been asking about 2007 plans since last October," continues Kalugdan.

Enthuses Sandi Benward, 2007 President of the Sacramento Stitching Guild, "The Stitch n' Ride train is one of the most happily anticipated events of the year. Hundreds of knitters converge with one goal in mind: knitting while riding to the Stitches West convention. New friends being made, new projects being started - everyone dreaming of the new yarns they will purchase. With happy knitters, goody bags, and prizes, it's like a little slice of heaven!"

Summing it up best is Beth Callahan, a Stitch n' Ride participant for three years, "Stitch & Ride is the very best way to get to the Stitches West convention. No traffic jams, no parking problems, no toll bridges: everyone just relaxes with friends while chatting and knitting. If we had to drive, we probably wouldn't bother to go."

About Stitch 'n Ride

Sponsored by Chronicle Books and CRAFT magazine, the Stitch 'n Ride takes place on train 727, departing Sacramento Station on February 24th at 7:40 a.m. Passengers can also board at any stations south of Sacramento, including: Davis, Suisun/Fairfield, Martinez, Richmond, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Hayward or Fremont.

OAKLAND, CALIF. January 25, 2007 - At the November 15, 2006 meeting of the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority Board of Directors, Forrest Williams, of The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Agency, was elected Chair, and Mary Ann Courville, of Solano Transportation Authority, was elected Vice Chair.

Williams, a member of the San Jose City Council since November 2000, serves on various City Council committees and is the current Chair of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority. "I'm honored that my fellow board members have put their trust in me to help lead the Capitol Corridor service. This is an exciting time for me to be part of the CCJPA, particularly because of our recent service expansion to San Jose earlier this year." Williams holds a BSEE, MSEE and DEECS degrees and served as Senior Engineering Manager for IBM Corporation.

Courville, who has served as Mayor of Dixon since 2000 has been active on the Capitol Corridor board and is leading efforts for a rail stop in downtown Dixon. "As Dixon has grown, so has the need for intercity rail in this community. Capitol Corridor helps connect the communities along its route and provides a viable transportation option to Sacramento, the Bay Area, and Silicon Valley from many Northern California communities." Courville holds a B.A. in English and a Teaching Credential in Secondary Education from Lone Mountain College (known as the San Francisco College for Women).

Williams and Courville will lead the Capitol Corridor board for the next two years. The board is comprised of 16 members from six local Northern California transportation agencies that encompass eight counties from Santa Clara County to Placer County.

The CCJPA Board of Directors provides policy direction to the CCJPA staff in delivering quality passenger rail service along the 170-mile corridor that stretches from San Jose to Sacramento and into the Sierra Foothills. The Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) is a unique organization tasked with providing the administrative management of an intercity passenger rail service. The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) provides the full-time management staff, Amtrak operates the service for the CCJPA, and Union Pacific Railroad dispatches the trains and maintains the tracks. The State of California provides operating support.

Funding is virtually 100% from passenger fares and state transportation funds. Over the past eight years under CCJPA management, the Capitol Corridor has achieved enormous strides in service performance - a 175% increase in ridership, a 158% increase in revenues, a 53% improvement in revenue-to-cost ratio, and a 300% increase in service levels, and it is now the third busiest Amtrak-operated route in the nation, with 1.3 million passengers generating more than 100 million annual passenger miles.

This past December, Capitol Corridor celebrated 15 years of service. Asked about this milestone, Williams remarks, "Our riders have asked for more high-quality, frequent service along the corridor, and we are providing them an unbeatable travel choice. We are proud to be celebrating 15 years of intercity train service and look forward to meeting their travel needs for the next 15 years."
