Capital Corridor is your connection to dressing up as a mermaid at Kidsfest in Oakland, watching ballet at Stern Grove, enjoying a free kite festival in Berkeley, and playing retro games at the Atari Party in Davis!
Kidsfest: 7/30, Oakland
Dress up the kids in their favorite mermaid and mermen costumes and come for a day of imagination, discovery, and learning at the annual Kidsfest on July 30 from 11am to 2pm. Held at Flax Art & Design at 1501 Martin Luther King Junior Way in Oakland , this year’s theme is Under the Sea, and costumes are encouraged! There will be a sing-along with The Krackens, as they perform old time classics, sea shanties, and other great songs about the big blue sea. There will be interactive events and demonstrations, crafts, face painting, fun games, and much more at this free event. Children under the age of 14 are required to have adult supervision. To get to the festivities, take the Capitol Corridor to the Richmond Station, connect to BART and take it to either the 12th St. or 19th St. BART stations – both are approximately a 5-minute walk from Flax. You can also take Capitol Corridor to the Oakland Jack London Square Station and from there walk about half an hour or take AC Transit with a free transfer from the Capitol Corridor. Ballet at the Stern Grove Festival: 7/31, San Francisco
Come early and spread a picnic blanket to stake a spot at one of the most beautiful settings to watch world-famous San Francisco Ballet perform for free. Starting at 2pm, the Stern Grove Festival will highlight a selection of works from their current repertory including “Swan Lake”, “Rubies” and Helgi Tomasson’s “The Fifth Season,” along with the GRAMMY-winning San Francisco Ballet Orchestra and conductor Martin West. There will be a pre-show artist’s talk at noon with a question-and-answer session following. To get there, take the Capitol Corridor to the Richmond Station or Oakland Coliseum Station and connect to BART to downtown San Francisco. From downtown San Francisco, you can take Muni, catch a cab, or take Lyft or Uber.
Berkeley Kite Festival: 7/30 – 31, Berkeley
Come join kite fliers and enthusiasts at the Berkeley Kite Festival in the Berkeley Marina and watch Bay Area skies change colors with motion. Attractions include the world’s largest octopus kite, a team kite ballet, and a professional Japanese kite team displaying “battle for the skies.” Learn how to build a kite, take kite-flying lessons while enjoying the beautiful view of the shoreline. There will be plenty of activities for everyone including taiko drummers and craft booths for kids. The free event begins goes from 10am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday. To get there, take the train to the Berkeley Station, which is a little less than a mile from the Berkeley Marina partially along the San Francisco Bay Trail. You can also take AC Transit’s 51B bus. Atari Party: 7/30, Davis
Take a trip down memory lane and relive childhood at an annual retro gaming and classic computing event in Davis. The Atari Party is a free event and will be held on July 30 from 12 to 5pm at the Yolo County Public Library. Volunteers will set up video game systems, computers, arcade cabinets and will have a prize give-away raffle drawing. There will also be non-Atari systems running Atari games — Nintendo Entertainment System, GameBoy Advance, Sega Genesis, Sony PlayStation and PlayStation 2 for the younger generations to enjoy. To get there, take the train to the Davis Station, which is about a mile from the event.
