Weekend Event Picks: Holiday Caroling and Festive Lights from Sacramento to San Francisco

Looking for something to do this weekend in Northern California? There are plenty of festive events and activities along the Capitol Corridor train route to get you in the holiday spirit.

Holiday Caroling at Jack London Square: 12/18, Oakland

This Friday, bring your singing voice and holiday spirit to Jack London Square for caroling along the waterfront! From 6:15-7:45pm on weeknights through December 23, the talented East Bay branch of the Golden Gate Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will perform a variety of holiday favorites throughout the square. Take the Capitol Corridor to the Oakland Jack London Station, and you’ll be a short stroll from holiday music.

Theatre of Lights: 12/17-12/20, Sacramento

Head to Old Sacramento this weekend for the 7th annual Theatre of Lights, a free holiday program featuring a live retelling of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, to be performed atop the balconies of historic buildings along K St. and accompanied by spectacular light and sound effects. The event will continue through the end of December on Thursday and Sunday evenings, with start times at 6:15pm and 7:45pm. The full schedule, including special holiday performances, is available here. To get there, take the train to the Sacramento station, which is steps from Old Town.

Union Square SF Winter Walk: 12/18-12/20, San Francisco

Make your way to Union Square for the second annual Winter Walk SF, a two-block long holiday pop-up plaza along Stockton St. The event will feature live music and performances, carolers, local artists, Off the Grid food trucks, a Philz Coffee truck, nightly holiday light shows, and more. On Saturdays, you can enjoy chocolate samples courtesy of Ghirardelli, and this Friday, December 18, there will be a special appearance by Snoopy! Winter Walk will be open daily until January 1, 2016. To get there, take Capitol Corridor’s dedicated bus from the Emeryville Amtrak station to the San Francisco Shopping Center stop, which is just over a five-minute walk from the festivities. Or, you can take the train to the Richmond station and take BART from there to the Powell St. station.

Holiday Art Exhibition & Sale: 12/20, Berkeley

On Sunday, come to Dancing Paintbrush Studio in Berkeley from 11am to 6pm for a special Holiday Art Exhibition & Sale featuring 20 years’ worth of unique drawings, paintings, and prints created by founder and director Beth Hird. What’s more, this admission-free event will include a selection of jewelry and other holiday gifts. To get there, take the train to the Berkeley station, and then walk down Fourth St. The studio is at 700 Gilman St. at Fourth, less than a mile from the station.
