1. National Train Day
**********************************************************************
To raise awareness of the vital role rail plays in our nation’s
transportation system, Amtrak is celebrating the first annual National
Train Day on Saturday, May 10, 2008. The date of National Train Day,
May 10, holds special meaning as it is the anniversary of the
completion of the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Point,
Utah in 1869. At Promontory Point, the east coast and west coast were
connected for the first time by rail.
Capitol Corridor will celebrate National Train day locally, with
several activities and events, including:
Presentation of the first ever California Golden STAR Award
Join the Emeryville community at the Emeryville station on Saturday
May 10, for rail-related fun for the whole family! From 11am – 1pm,
the City of Emeryville will host a community celebration in
coordination with the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA),
Caltrans Division of Rail and Amtrak, to recognize National Train Day,
and the key role that the Emeryville station plays in getting people
and goods where they need to go. The CCJPA, Caltrans and Amtrak will
present the first-ever California Golden STAR (California Golden State
Advocate of Rail) Award. Additionally, the station will host
family-friendly fun such as a model train display, cookies and punch,
and children’s activities.
Free Admission to the California State Railroad Museum
On May 10, 2008, passengers showing their Amtrak ticket stub or
Sacramento River Cats game ticket stub or season ticket holder pass
will receive free admission to the California State Railroad Museum.

2. June Trackwork Project
**********************************************************************
In early June, Union Pacific will upgrade track infrastructure
(primarily railroad ties & bridges) between Martinez and
Suisun/Fairfield, installing approximately 40,000 new wood ties at
their own expense. This is the second installment of a multi-year
track upgrade project between Oakland and Sacramento, which will keep
the railroad in good condition so trains can operate reliably.
During the course of the track work, some morning and early afternoon
Capitol Corridor trains will not operate between Martinez and
Suisun/Fairfield. Instead, connecting busses will handle passengers
between those two stations, and trains will operate on the remainder
of the route on a modified schedule. Early morning and late
afternoon/evening trains should not be affected. At this point, the
modified schedule for the affected trains is still being developed.
More information will be announced when it becomes available.

4. California Intercity Rail Video
**********************************************************************
On February 21, 2008, an “Intercity Passenger Rail Day” was held in
Sacramento to provide a forum for legislators, transportation
executives, corridor managers and elected officials to discuss
strategies to sustain and expand intercity passenger service. The
Chairs of all four intercity passenger rail corridors spoke on the
benefits and challenges of rail and urged all legislators to commit to
providing an annual stream of funding to sustain and improve the
state’s passenger rail system.
As part of the educational program for legislators and executives,
CCJPA produced a video to showcase the successes of the State of
California’s 18-year investment in passenger rail, featuring the
Capitol Corridor, Pacific Surfliner, and San Joaquin rail lines. The
Capitol Corridor has hosted a copy of this educational video on our
website for passengers to view.
Please be advised that the video will load for 10 seconds before
playing (length: 10 minutes).
