4. September is “Rail Safety Month

California lawmakers have designated September as “Rail Safety Month” and to help build awareness about rail safety, CCJPA teamed up with Amtrak, Union Pacific Railroad, Caltrans Division of Rail and Operation Lifesaver staff to sponsor a media event in Sacramento earlier this month.Â

The event featured Senator Carol Liu, who wrote the bill to deem September as Rail Safety month. Joining the Senator was Caltrans Deputy Director Martin Tuttle and Robin Potter (pictured here), a rail safety advocate and mother of a teen who died when playing on railroad tracks near his home. Safety and security are top priorities for the CCJPA.Â

Since the very first Rail Safety month was declared in 2009, rail trespassing incidents on Capitol Corridor trains decreased 58% compared to the prior year. A list of rail safety tips are published in the latest Message to Riders and can be viewed on Operation Lifesaver’s site.
