Juneteenth

Juneteenth

Happy Juneteenth! Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on June 19th each year in the United States. It commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and is a significant milestone in the country’s history. The Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declared the freedom of slaves in Confederate states, including Texas. However, enforcement in Texas was delayed until June 19, 1865, marking the day now celebrated as Juneteenth.

Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the resilience, strength, and perseverance of the African American community throughout history. From festivals to enlightening discussions, gather your spirit of celebration and hop on board the train to Juneteenth events near you!

Mak Roote Artwork Restoration at Berkeley Station

This past April, the City of Berkeley’s Public Art Program completed a major artwork restoration project at Berkeley Transit Plaza. This transit station, which Capitol Corridor service, has about 60,000 passengers that pass through annually as they travel to work, home, or to visit local shops in the area.

Additionally, the City made major improvements in the area, such as creating a graffiti abatement strategy for north and south ramp walls of University Avenue, replacing vandalized parking signage and broken newspaper boxes, repainting street curbs and accessible parking throughout underpass area, power washing glass canopies at train and bus waiting areas, and street sweeping and removal of debris and weeds throughout underpass area. Efforts to beautify and upkeep this area continue. Now, the local community and train riders alike can enjoy these restored works of art!

Juneteenth 2024

Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on June 19th each year in the United States. It commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and is a significant milestone in the country’s history. The Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declared the freedom of slaves in Confederate states, including Texas. However, enforcement in Texas was delayed until June 19, 1865, marking the day now celebrated as Juneteenth. It symbolizes the end of chattel slavery in the United States, marking a turning point in the nation’s struggle for freedom and equality. Despite the delayed news of their freedom in Texas, African Americans embraced Juneteenth as a day of celebration and empowerment, using it as a platform to advocate for civil rights, equality, and social change. It represents the recognition of the inherent rights and dignity of African Americans, who had endured centuries of bondage and oppression.

Link21 completes analysis of train technology for second Bay Crossing

June 3, 2024

OAKLAND, CA — The Link21 Program is making progress toward its goal of creating a faster, more connected train system across the 21-county Northern California Megaregion that provides equitable, affordable, and accessible travel for future generations. One key aspect is building a second underground train crossing of the San Francisco Bay, allowing riders to travel to various destinations in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento area, Monterey Bay area, and Northern San Joaquin Valley.

Link21 recently completed an exciting analysis of the different benefits that standard-gauge (Regional Rail) and broad-gauge (BART) train technologies can provide to the region through this project. This Program milestone will determine which technology should operate in the new crossing as an important step toward defining a project that will provide riders with enhanced and more reliable travel options.

Through the spring and early summer, Link21 is on an informational roadshow sharing analysis findings that demonstrate how the two technologies provide similar benefits and where they differ in terms of service, equitable outcomes, connections, and operations.

“Link21 will make investments to offer more train service for future generations to thrive, connect, and flourish in our vibrant Megaregion,” said Link21 Program Director Sadie Graham. “The community and stakeholder engagement we do now and the decisions we make will help ensure the project delivers accessible, reliable, and environmentally conscious transit solutions that will benefit our communities for years to come.”
