Capitol Corridor Surpasses One Million Riders in FY2024 Approaching Pre-Pandemic Ridership Levels

October 23, 2024

Oakland, CA, October 23, 2024 – Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) proudly announces that ridership has exceeded one million passengers in Fiscal Year 2024 (FY2024), marking a significant milestone in its recovery from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. This achievement builds on the momentum from FY2023, when Capitol Corridor carried over 921,000 passengers, bringing the service closer to pre-pandemic levels, when ridership reached 1.8 million in 2019.

“Our achievement of surpassing 1 million riders this fiscal year is a testament to the resilience of our service and the loyalty of our passengers,” said Robert Padgette, Managing Director of CCJPA. “As we continue to welcome back longtime riders and attract new ones, this milestone reflects the vital role Capitol Corridor plays in connecting communities across Northern California. We’re excited to build on this momentum and further improve the experience for everyone who chooses to travel with us.”

A key contributor to this success was the popularity of Capitol Corridor’s event trains to Levi’s Stadium, which transported over 13,000 passengers to San Francisco 49ers games and concerts during the Spring/Summer concert series. Additionally, Capitol Corridor brought Oakland A’s fans to the team’s final home game at the Oakland Coliseum in September, further boosting ridership.

Capitol Corridor, California Operation Lifesaver & Rail Partners Kickoff September Rail Safety Month Special Safety Train Event in Oakland

August 28, 2024

Oakland, CA, August 28, 2024 – Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA), California Operation Lifesaver (CAOL), Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR), Amtrak, and other rail partners launched September Rail Safety Month with a special safety train event in Oakland today. The mission is to raise awareness and promote rail safety tips in and around railroad tracks and crossings.Ā

ā€œThe safety of our passengers is our number one priority, said Managing Director Rob Padgette. ā€œCapitol Corridor is working closely with cities and counties long our entire route to prevent incidents at railroad crossings, especially those between Oakland and Hayward.ā€Ā Ā

City officials and representatives from Oakland, San Leandro, and Hayward traveled onboard the train to witness firsthand, the areas where innovative safety initiatives are most needed in these communities.Ā Ā

ā€œNo one can do it alone,ā€ said Nancy Sheehan-McCulloch, Executive Director, California Operation Lifesaver. ā€œYou can help save lives and stop track tragedies. Share rail safety tips with your loved ones. It takes all of us working together to impact change. Every month is Rail Safety Month.ā€Ā

In 2009, the California State Legislature proclaimed and presented the September Rail Safety Month proclamation to California Operation Lifesaver and its rail safety partners. Since then, rail safety partners have joined forces to raise awareness and save lives.Ā Ā

ā€œUnion Pacific cares about the communities we serve,ā€ said Peggy Ygbuhay, Sr. Director, Public Affairs at Union Pacific Railroad. ā€œRail Safety Month is a great time to reset habits – never try to beat a train and use designated crossings when walking over the tracks. We want everyone to go home safely and won’t be satisfied until we reach our ultimate goal of zero incidents or injuries.ā€ For more community safety tips, visit UP.com/Safety.Ā

Amtrak, Union Pacific Railroad police, and local law enforcement from multiple jurisdictions participated in the event, both on the train and from the ground. They issued warnings and citations to motorists and pedestrians who failed to adhere to traffic signs and signals at railroad crossings.Ā

ā€œWe have come together across the industry to raise awareness and educate the public on how to keep themselves, friends, and families safe near railroad tracks and crossings,ā€ said Amtrak Police Department Inspector Doug Calcagno. ā€œRail Safety is a team effort. As we continue to grow, the best resource to address track incidents is to come together as one.ā€Ā

Throughout September, Capitol Corridor and its rail partners will continue to engage in a range of activities to promote rail safety, including public awareness campaigns, educational workshops, and safety demonstrations.Ā
