Passenger Identification Policy

Adult passengers (18 and older) must have valid photo identification to purchase tickets from ticket agents and conductors (also, applies to minors ages 15-17). At the direction of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), random passenger ticket and identification checks are conducted on board trains. Please be prepared to show a photo ID to the on-board crew.

Amtrak and Capitol Corridor's Conditions of Carriage

Amtrak and Capitol Corridor may refuse to carry passengers:

  • Who have not paid the applicable fare.
  • Whose conduct is objectionable (such as, but not limited to, being under the influence of alcohol or narcotics).
  • Whose personal hygiene makes them offensive.
  • Who pose a health, safety or security hazard to other passengers or employees.
  • Who refuse to comply with safety or security rules or with instructions of Amtrak and Capitol Corridor personnel.
  • Who would require Amtrak or Capitol Corridor personnel to provide personal care services or otherwise do not meet the essential requirements for the receipt of Amtrak and Capitol Corridor service (unable to take care of themselves).
  • Who refuse to consent to Amtrak security inspections of persons and/or baggage on board Amtrak and Capitol Corridor trains and/or at designated areas, such as train platforms and passenger boarding or waiting areas.

Ticket Policies - Please Show Your Ticket!

Please be ready to present your ticket and valid photo ID to the conductor once you are seated, or to the motorcoach bus driver at the time of boarding. Even if you are a daily rider, and hold a multi-ride ticket, you must still present that ticket to the conductor or driver. Many of you are familiar with the conductor or driver who works on your train or bus, but they are still required to check your tickets - it is their job! Please don't make their jobs difficult for them. If you are making connections between the train and bus, you must be ready to show your ticket for each segment of travel.

About your Amtrak Tickets

Tickets are evidence of fare paid and must be surrendered for cancellation or inspection by any conductor or authorized carrier representative.

Tickets are valid:

  • Between the stations listed on the ticket.
  • For the class of service and accommodations listed on the ticket.
  • Within the validity period stated on the ticket.
  • Subject to other conditions as stated on the ticket.

Tickets are void if:

  • They bear alterations or erasures.
  • Passenger receipt is detached.
  • Presented for passage by any person(s) other than the individual or party for whom they were originally purchased, unless authorized by fare code rules.

Lost, Stolen or Destroyed Tickets

Please safeguard your tickets as you would cash. Amtrak and Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority are not liable for lost, stolen, misplaced or destroyed tickets. Tickets are required for travel--you cannot travel on lost tickets. To be able to travel, you must repurchase your tickets.

Refund for Lost Tickets

As Amtrak issues the tickets for the Capitol Corridor service, you may only apply for a refund for lost or destroyed through Amtrak. To do so, please download, print out, complete and sign their Lost Ticket Refund Application Form. Please mail the completed form to the address indicated on the form. Amtrak does not accept online submissions for this form.

Applying for refunds on lost tickets:

  • You may submit an application for refund up to one year from the purchase date of the lost tickets.
  • You must provide ticket numbers for lost tickets. For this reason, we suggest you write down your ticket numbers when you first purchase your tickets.
  • Amtrak charges substantial service charges and refund fees to process refunds for lost or destroyed tickets.
  • Not all tickets are eligible for refund.
  • Applications for refunds for lost tickets are held for five months from the date of receipt before processing.
  • Additional terms and conditions apply. Please download and refer to the Lost Ticket Refund Application Form or read the Amtrak refund policy for details.
